... Summary...
after a more extensive review of the character and orientation of
damage... in conjunction with both eyewitness reports and
meteorological data that suggest probable occurrences of a
tornado... the National Weather Service in Raleigh NC has confirmed
a couple of brief tornado touchdowns along an otherwise
discontinuous 12-mile path of damaging straight-line wind... from
near Lexington to Thomasville in Davidson County North Carolina on
02/03/2016. It is important to note that straight line wind can be
just as strong... and sometimes even stronger... than that of a
tornado; and differentiating between the two is often times very
difficult in the case of weak tornadoes.

Numerous trees... both hardwoods and softwoods... were either
snapped or uprooted along the discontinuous damage path. Most of
the snapped hardwoods... including one whose trunk was around four
feet in diameter where the breakage occurred... had evidence of
inner rot at the Point of failure... while most of the snapped
softwoods appeared healthy. Some of the downed trees and large
branches fell onto and damaged homes or vehicles on the southwest
side of Thomasville... including a large Oak Tree that was uprooted
and crushed a Sedan in the 2800-2900 block of Upper Lake Road. The
degree of damage to the trees... taking into account their health
and a relatively wet ground... suggests wind speeds were skewed toward
the lower bound of the expected range... between 75 and 95 mph.

Otherwise... damage to homes was relatively minor in both
Lexington and Thomasville and was confined mostly to a loss of
shingles; gutters; and siding... with a few broken glass windows
and a couple of destroyed garage doors. There was continued minor
damage to multiple manufactured homes (single-wides) near the
intersection of tussey Road and State Road 1147. The expected wind speed
with the degree of damage to these structures is between 70 and
80 mph.

There were also approximately six to eight farm outbuildings that
were severely damaged or destroyed... including a few that
sustained collapsed walls and major loss of roof panels... mainly
near Upper Lake Road and Wayside drive. The expected wind speed
for this degree of damage is between 70 and 90 mph.

While the character of a significant amount of the damage was in
a slightly divergent pattern... consistent with straight-line
wind... there were small sections of the damage path that included
exclusively non-divergent damage (ie. Was turned slightly inward
or was completely straight)... which is consistent with the
occurrence of a weak tornado.

Lastly... there were a few eyewitness accounts that described a
funnel in The Upper Lake Road area... including one account that
included "swirling wind and debris"... which is also consistent
with the rotary wind of a tornado.

We would like to extend a special thanks to the emergency
management community in Davidson County... as the extent of the
survey would have not been possible without their guidance and
assistance.

For reference... the Enhanced Fujita scale classifies tornadoes
into the following categories:

EF0... wind speeds 65 to 85 mph.
EF1... wind speeds 86 to 110 mph.
EF2... wind speeds 111 to 135 mph.
EF3... wind speeds 136 to 165 mph.
EF4... wind speeds 166 to 200 mph.
EF5... wind speeds greater than 200 mph.
