       ... January 2015 climate summary for Jacksonville...

    ... active start to the month followed by relatively quiet
             weather for the second half of January...

The beginning of the month saw some intense weather shifts from
record breaking high temperatures to afternoon snow flurries within
a matter of 5 days. A Max temperature of 81 degrees was measured on
the 3rd which broke the daily record followed by a record low Max
temperature of 40 degrees a few days later on the 8th. Snow was seen
on the afternoon of the 8th in Jacksonville with a trace measured at
jia and no accumulations. The last time a trace of snowfall was
measured in Jacksonville was in December of 2010. Severe weather was
also seen during the beginning of the month with a confirmed EF1
tornado just east of Alma Georgia on the 5th. It had a path length
of approximately 6.2 miles and a width of 30 to 50 yards. The second
half of January was relatively quieter with one rainfall event and a
few windy days.

At Jacksonville International Airport...

Temperatures... the average temperature for January was 53.4 degrees
... 0.3 degrees above normal. The average daily high was 64.2 degrees
and the average daily low was 42.7 degrees. The maximum temperature
for the month was 81 degrees on the 3rd and the minimum for the
month was 27 degrees on the 8th. There were 2 days with a minimum
temperature of 32 or below. Three temperature records were tied or
broken in January. A record daily high temperature was set on the
3rd with a temperature of 81 degrees. This broke the previous record
of 80 set in 1982. A record high minimum temperature was set on the
4th with a temperature of 65 degrees... breaking the previous record
of 63 degrees set in 1950. A record low maximum temperature was set
on the 8th with a temperature of 40 degrees. This tied the previous
record set in 1958.

Rainfall... there were 7 days of measurable rainfall in January at
Jacksonville International Airport. Monthly rainfall totaled 3.08
inches... 0.22 inches below normal. The greatest 24 hour total was
1.46 inches on the 23rd to 24th. A record daily maximum snowfall was
set on the 8th with a trace. This tied the old record of a trace set
in 1958.

Wind... the average wind speed for January was 7.0 miles per hour.
The peak wind gust for the month was 42 miles per hour from the
northwest on the 4th.

For energy consumption purposes... there were 362 heating degree
days... which is 18 below normal. There were 13 cooling degree
days... which is 2 above normal.

February outlook... the temperature outlook for February calls for
equal chances of above... below... and near normal temperatures. The
precipitation outlook shows heightened chances to see above normal
precipitation in February. The normal monthly average temperature is
56.4 degrees. The average Max temperature is 68.2 degrees and the
average min temperature is 44.7 degrees. Average February rainfall
is 3.19 inches.
