Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 4:40 PM CDT on April 29, 2017

Expires 2:00 AM EDT on May 01, 2017

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through late Sunday
night...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western
Kentucky, and southeast Missouri, including the following
areas, in southern Illinois, Alexander, Edwards, Franklin,
Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson,
Massac, Perry IL, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union, Wabash, Wayne
IL, white, and Williamson. In southwest Indiana, Gibson, Pike,
Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick. In western Kentucky,
Ballard, Carlisle, Daviess, Fulton, Henderson, Hickman,
McCracken, and Union KY. In southeast Missouri, Bollinger,
Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Mississippi, New Madrid, Perry
MO, Ripley, Scott, Stoddard, and Wayne MO.

* Through late Sunday night

* the Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for all of southeastern
Missouri, southern Illinois, southwestern Indiana, and a few
border counties of western Kentucky along the Ohio and
Mississippi rivers. Numerous thunderstorms with very heavy rain
are expected to spread eastward across mainly southeastern
Missouri and parts of southern Illinois this evening, and
develop there again overnight. This will only worsen an already
serious situation in this part of the region. Meanwhile, areas
further east may not see much precipitation tonight. However,
thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall are expected to expand
eastward into the rest of the region throughout the day Sunday.
Radar estimates of as much as eight inches of rain have already
fallen over parts of the watch area. An additional two to six
inches of rain is expected to occur before the storm system
exits the area Sunday night, with the heaviest rainfall expected
in the Missouri Ozark foothills. Locally higher amounts are
also possible where numerous thunderstorms move across the same
area.

* In addition to the possibility of flash flooding of some
roadways and streams, the heavy rainfall is expected to cause
further rises on many of the area rivers, particularly the
smaller rivers in southeast Missouri, such as the Saint Francis,
black, and current rivers. Given the widespread rainfall across
the region, other larger river systems, such as the Mississippi
and Ohio rivers will see rises in water levels occur in early
may. Due to the prolonged period of rain, some of the flash
flood warnings that are issued may be transitioned to overland
flood warnings.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

Special Statement

Statement as of 6:20 PM CDT on April 29, 2017

Expires 9:30 PM EDT on April 29, 2017

... Scattered strong thunderstorms expected across southern
Illinois and southeast Missouri through the evening...

Thunderstorms will continue to increase and slowly move east
across southeast Missouri and southern Illinois this evening.

At 620 PM... the activity extended from near Du Quoin, southwest
to Perryville Missouri to near Van Buren in Carter County. Some
isolated activity developed ahead of the line of storms as well.

Any of the stronger storms could produce hail up to penny size
along with 30 to 45 mph winds.

We are also concerned with the additional heavy rainfall and more
flash flooding this evening. If a Flash Flood Warning is issued
for your area, take action immediately. Do not drive across a
water covered Road.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for much of the area
west of the Wabash River, and north of a Van Buren Missouri to
Paducah Kentucky line through 10 p.M. Isolated severe storms
capable of large hail and locally damaging winds will be possible.
