... Periods of heavy rain this afternoon along with strong wind
Rain intensity will increase across areas west of Interstate 77
early this afternoon ahead of a strong cold front. Rainfall
amounts will be heaviest along the Blue Ridge Parkway from Fancy
Gap, Virginia, to Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Upwards of 4
inches of rain is possible along the parkway, which may lead to
small stream flooding. Elsewhere, rainfall will be heavy enough to
cause small ditches to overflow, especially where leaves have
come off the trees, resulting in clogged ditches and drainages.
In addition to the rain, winds will be gusty, which may result in
power outages due to downed trees or tree limbs. In general,
winds will gust between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph,
at elevations above 4000 feet.
If you are traveling this afternoon, be prepared for slippery wet
roads due to the combination of leaves and water. Debris from Road
side ditches may also get washed onto the Highway, in addition to
tree limbs from the wind.
