The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* flood advisory for...
northeastern Rabun County in northeastern Georgia...
southeastern Macon County in western North Carolina...
southeastern Jackson County in western North Carolina...
north central Oconee County in upstate South Carolina...

* until 545 PM EDT

* at 1150 am EDT, Doppler radar indicated periods of widespread
heavy rain has fallen over the advisory area over the past 6-8
hours. This may cause minor flooding in the advisory area.
Widespread 2-3 inches of rain has fallen since 7am. An additional
1-2 inches of rain is expected over the 3-6 hours as a line
of showers and thunderstorms pushes from west to east across the
area. This may cause additional flooding and may exacerbate
ongoing flooding.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Highlands, Cashiers, bad creek, Pine Mountain, Whiteside Mountain,
Sapphire and Scaly Mountain.

* The following streams and their associated tributaries may be
experiencing rapid rises: Chattooga river, Cullasaja river,
Clear Creek, Logan creek, Norton Mill Creek, East Fork overflow
creek, Big Creek, and Brooks Creek.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Heavy rainfall will cause rapid rises on small creeks and streams,
possibly flooding low water crossings and farmland. Do not attempt to
travel across flooded roads. Turn around, dont drown.

or landslides to the National Weather Service by calling toll free,

Rabun... Macon and western Oconee counties until 115 PM EDT...

At 1215 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain showers along a
line extending from 11 miles east of Hayesville to 7 miles west of
Homer, and moving east at 20 mph.

Locations to be impacted include...
Toccoa, Franklin, Clayton, Clarkesville, Carnesville, Cornelia,
Baldwin, Demorest, Mount Airy and Highlands.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph and torrential rainfall rates up to 3 inches
per hour will be possible in these areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

The combination of gusty winds and saturated soil conditions will
cause scattered trees and power lines to fall. Seek shelter inside an
interior room.

Torrential rainfall may flood areas with poor drainage, such as
ditches and underpasses. Avoid these areas and do not cross flooded
roads. Water levels of small streams may also rise rapidly. Seek
higher ground if threatened by flood waters.

These storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio and
TV stations, as well as local cable TV outlets for additional
information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.
