Buchanan County in southwestern Virginia...

* until 830 PM EDT

* at 432 PM EDT... Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing
heavy rain across the warned area. Flash flooding is expected to
begin shortly.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Clintwood... Grundy... Haysi... John Flannagan Lake... breaks Interstate...
Big Rock... Clinchco... McClure... Roseann... Vansant... Nora... Hurley and
Stacy.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around... don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate Route.

inch of rainfall today alone... and the system is expected to
bring 1 to 2 inches of rain to the Flash Flood Watch area when
all is said and done by Tuesday morning. The heaviest of the
rainfall is expected through the evening hours.

* Heavy rain... combined with already saturated soils... will
likely lead to flash flooding in some areas... as already swollen
streams and rivers could rise rapidly and overflow their banks.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

At 349 PM EDT... thunderstorms with heavy rain were moving across
southwest Virginia.

Locations impacted include...
Clintwood... Grundy... Haysi... John Flannagan Lake... Davenport... breaks
Interstate... Big Rock... Trammel... Paw Paw... Clinchco... Oakwood... McClure...
Roseann... Vansant... Nora... Stacy and Hurley.

Localized flooding is possible. Do not drive your vehicle through
flooded roadways. If additional storms look to threaten the area... a
Flash Flood Warning may be necessary.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to travel across
flooded roads. Find alternate routes. It takes only a few inches of
swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

... Summary...
the National Weather Service in Charleston WV has confirmed
straight line wind damage near Grayson in Carter County Kentucky on 5/1/2016.

The winds started just east of Interstate 64 at the top of
criswell Lane which is at approximately 900 feet. A few trees in
the area were snapped and uprooted. Due to the terrain in The
Hollow... the winds increased as the storm moved southeast. A
singlewide trailer was destroyed at the intersection of criswell
Lane and US 60. The strongest winds were found at this location.
The storm then continued southeast to Green Oaks drive where
several large trees were uprooted. There was also evidence of hail
to the size of Golf balls /1.75 inches/ at this location.

For reference...
a microburst is a convective downdraft with an affected outflow
area of less than 2 1/2 miles wide and peak winds lasting less
than 5 minutes. Microbursts may induce dangerous horizontal and
vertical wind shears... which can adversely affect aircraft
performance and cause property damage. Straight-line winds are
generally any wind that is not associated with rotation... used
mainly to differentiate them from tornadic winds.
