Special Statement

Statement as of 12:02 PM EDT on July 01, 2016

Expires 2:15 PM EDT on July 01, 2016

... Strong to possibly severe thunderstorms expected later this
afternoon and evening...

Thunderstorms will develop by 2 PM across the Saint Lawrence
valley and move eastward. They should reach the Champlain Valley
between 3 and 5 PM and then push into central and eastern Vermont
between 5 and 7 PM.

Some of these thunderstorms are expected to be strong to possibly
severe.

The primary threat will be from strong wind gusts that
will have the potential to produce damage such as Downing trees
and powerlines. Small hail will also be possible.

Briefly heavy rain will accompany the storms, and there is a
possibility for localized flooding, mainly across parts of the
Adirondacks and north-central Vermont where heavy rain fell
earlier this week.

The thunderstorm threat will end by early evening across northern
New York and by late evening across Vermont.

All thunderstorms will produce frequent lightning strikes. Those
people who are outdoors, such as boating or hiking, need to pay
very close attention to the changing weather conditions, and be
prepared to move to a safe location well before the storm reaches
your location. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from the center
of a thunderstorm, so if you can hear thunder, you need to already
be in safe shelter.
